A 25 kVA transformer is the determined size of a transformer and is expressed in kVA, which stands for Kilovolt-Ampere. Although when operated, they are expressed in Watts.

Generally, a 1KW (1000 Watts) load would need a 1 KVA transformer (1,000 Volt-Amps), and a 25 kVA distribution transformer can be connected to six or seven homes. Also, technically, a 1,000 KVA is equivalent to a 1 MVA rating of a transformer.

DAELIM is a manufacturer of electric products that provides a variety of types of transformers. With such expertise in electric manufacturing, they ensure that clients are satisfied with their purchases.

Types Of 25 kVA Transformer

25 kVA transformer1

The types of 25 kVA transformers can range within 25 kVA ratings or more. Here you’ll also know their common uses.

Single-Phase Transformers

Single-phase transformers are commonly used in residential and commercial applications like computers. This type of transformer uses a single-phase alternating current (AC). These types can have 25 kVA transformer ratings:

  • Encapsulated – are usually used in industrial, commercial, and lighting operations, to which facilities can stack these up and turn them into functioning three-phase transformers. This type of single-phase transformer can have low ratings ranging from 50 VA to 25 kVA
  • Ventilated – are also used in industrial, commercial, and lighting operations, to which they can have ratings ranging from 25 to 100 kVA
  • Totally enclosed non-ventilated – are more used in areas with high volumes of dirt and debris, which can have ratings that can range from 25 to 500 kVA

Three-Phase Transformers

Three-phase transformers are used more in higher ratings, such as in power generation and electrical distribution. It has three lines of power angled by 120 degrees from the other two.

These are similar to single-phase transformers with the same common applications. But the encapsulated and totally enclosed non-ventilated types are the ones that are more likely to have a 25 kVA transformer.

  • Encapsulated – can have ratings that range from 3 to 75 kVA
  • Ventilated – can have ratings up to 1,000 kVA
  • Totally enclosed, non-ventilated – can have ratings that can range from 25 to 500 kVA

25 kVA 3-Phase Dry Type Distribution Transformer

The kVA rating requirements depend on the design of the transformer, more known as a design per requirement.

Generally, the power transformer can handle a higher rating and is designed for 100% maximum efficiency. These transformers also have minimal load fluctuations, mostly used on transmission substations connecting two or more transmission lines.

Compared to these power transformers, distribution transformers work and require a lower kVA rating of the transformer. The distribution transformer has 50% to 70% maximum efficiency.

As a result, this type of transformer decreases the voltages in power transmission lines. Such that distribution transformers can be categorized according to their:

  • Mounting location – if it’s the pole, pad, or underground vault
  • Type of insulation – if it’s liquid-immersed, oil-immersed, or dry-type
  • The number of phases – if it’s single-phase or three-phase
  • Voltage class – which refers to the level of insulation on a device to determine the maximum voltage that can be applied continuously between the conducting parts and ground potential
  • Basic impulse insulation level (BIL) – refers to the impulse level of lines and equipment that can be high enough for arresters to protect from voltage surges. These arresters drain the surges before the insulation is damaged

Dry types of transformers are “dry” in their natural ventilation to their system having coils made of copper or aluminum windings. This contrasts with oil-type transformers that may use oil or silicone to cool coils and the electrical core. Dry types are also often used for small or medium-voltage applications.

Other Types of Transformers

Here are the other types of transformers classified according to their mounting location and which type of substation.

Live Front 25 kV Pad-Mounted Transformer

25 kV Pad-Mounted Transformer1

When you say it’s a live front, it refers to the exposed end of the cable and terminals, and these are usually applied to oil-immersed pad-mounted transformers. A pad-mounted transformer refers to its mounting location in a locked steel cabinet mounted on a concrete pad (ground-mounted).

Power Substation Transformer

A power substation transformer distributes and transmits electricity. These substation transformers convert high voltage to low voltage and vice versa. The following are some of the types of a power substation transformers:

  1. Step up substation – inside its substation contains higher output voltage than the input voltage.
  1. Step-down substation – its substation contains a higher input voltage than the output voltage.
  1. Distribution substation – it transmits electricity directly to its industrial and residential consumers, where its distribution feeder transmits power from the distribution substation to the end consumers.
  1. Underground distribution substation – its main transformer and main electrical component are installed underground, bringing high voltage directly to the city center. It is convenient for planning and does not interfere with the operations within the city proper, and they are unnoticeable.

Bitcoin Mining Power System

25 kVA transformer1

Your mining power supply usually consumes 1000 kVA to 5,000 kVA. There’s a bitcoin mining power system with a three-phase, pad-mounted distribution transformer with a capacity up to 3000 kVA.

Pad-mounted transformers for your crypto farm power are the go-to transformers to power for mining. If you’re thinking of buying one, you should look first at the following:

  • Input voltage – the primary voltage
  • Output voltage – the secondary voltage and can be directly connected to your mining power supply
  • Total consumed power – expressed in kVA or MVA, which refers to the total power consumed by the transformer for crypto mining

How is kVA rating calculated?

Getting the kVA rating of a transformer is the same as getting the MVA rating. But the transformer is more expressed or rated in kVA. For example, a 25 kVA transformer has a power rating of 25 kVA, which is equivalent to the 0.025 MVA rating of a transformer.

For a single-phase transformer, it is expressed in P = V x I where:

  • V = Primary or Secondary Voltage
  • I = Primary or Secondary Current
  • P = Power of transformer in VA (Volt-Amps)

For three-phase transformer, it is expressed in P = √3 x V x I where:

  • V = Primary or Secondary Voltage
  • I = Primary or Secondary Current
  • √3 = 1.732
  • P = Power of transformer in VA (Volt-Amps)

How much kVA is required for a house?

25 kVA transformer1

A house must have at least 3-5 kVA for its power to supply appliances, lighting, and other things. Suppose a generator with this power can also run the house in case of a power outage.

Why does Bitcoin use so much energy?

Bitcoin consumes so much energy because it needs it to verify transactions, and computers need more complex calculations. If you’re into running a crypto farm, you will consume a large amount of energy and will need transformers to power up and distribute energy.

Additionally, Bitcoin can only handle 4 transactions per second (TPS), compared to Visa, which can handle 1,700 TPS.

Conclusion

A 25 kVA transformer is usually used in pad-mounted and distribution substation transformers, enough to distribute power on the transmission lines that can supply 6-7 houses.

Although for bitcoin mining farms, a 25 kVA rating won’t be enough to power complex computations for transaction verifications. This usually would need a larger power, such as 1,000 kVA.
